Campus Wireless Network Standard

Introduction

The purpose of this standard is to define the requirements to ensure the security, stability, efficient operations management, and uniformity of wireless network access points and ports within West Virginia University’s campus network. This standard is designed to minimize the potential exposure to West Virginia University and its community from damages, attack, and unauthorized access.

This standard applies to all students, employees, and guests that utilize the WVU campus network. This standard works in conjunction with the University’s Campus Network Standard.

Effective Date

February 21, 2012

Standard

1.1. The Office of Information Technology (ITS) is responsible for designing, managing and securing the WVU wireless network access points, including network address and access control management. Wireless access points will be connected by ITS to the campus network at approved connectivity points. Wireless networks include WVU.Encrypted, WVU.Guest, and WVU.ResNet.

1.2. Modifications or extensions to the wireless network are prohibited unless approved by ITS.

1.3. Users must authenticate when connecting to the campus wireless network. West Virginia University employees must access any University owned applications or systems via the WVU.Encrypted wireless network.

1.4. Network infrastructure equipment must be registered with ITS prior to installation and be placed in ITS-approved locations (communication closets). These locations must be secured by an electronic lock system or an ITS-approved alternative. All communication closets must have a process in place to review logs on a monthly basis.

1.5. All wireless network traffic on the campus network is monitored.  Security scans will be conducted periodically on the campus network.  By connecting a computer or device to the network, employees, students, and guests are acknowledging that the network traffic to and from the computer or device may be scanned, as set forth in the Acceptable Use Standard.

West Virginia University reserves the right to prioritize, restrict, or block certain types of wireless network traffic.

Violations

Violation of or non-compliance with this standard will be addressed in accordance with established WVU disciplinary policies and procedures, as issued and enforced by the appropriate authorities. Failure to comply with this or other related standards may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of one’s employment or studies.

Exceptions

Exceptions to IT Standards will be considered using the IT Standard Exception Procedure.
