About Modernization Program

MODERNIZATION PROGRAM

West Virginia University is reimagining business as usual, from how we engage prospective students to how we manage research and how we support faculty and staff in their work.

Change on this scale is an ambitious, once-in-a-generation opportunity to lay the foundations for a more connected, efficient, and future-ready university.

The $121 million Modernization Program is comprised of the following initiatives:

  • Workday Business Modernization transforms business processes related to finance, human resources, and students through the multi-phase implementation of a unified platform. Implementation of Workday Finance and Human Capital Management is underway with a target implementation date of July 2027. Workday Adaptive Planning and Workday Student will be implemented in subsequent phases.
  • WVU Research Administration Portal (WRAP) centers on improving business processes related to the administration of research through the multi-phase implementation of the Huron Research Suite. The Grants and Agreements and Conflict of Interest modules were launched in February 2025.
  • Implementation of the Human Research Toolkit and Institutional Review Board modules is in progress. Additional modules for animal research compliance and operations and institutional biosafety will be implemented in subsequent phases.
  • Student Experience focuses on building an innovative digital student experience from prospect to alum on the Salesforce platform. The initial release of our new recruitment and admissions journey was released in September 2025. Following a reassessment of needs, the University is now in the process of shifting from Salesforce to Slate. Additional projects like student case management, advising, and student success are planned for future phases.
  • Data Strategy positions the University’s data as a strategic asset and ensures leaders have ready access to accurate, current, and reliable data to make informed strategic decisions. A data lake and analytics platform was released in September 2023, followed by the launch of a data governance program in January 2025. With the foundation set, we are positioned to gather and curate data for analysis and decision-making, starting with the human resources and student data domains.
