Activate Account

Background

The Activate Account process includes five parts:

Part 1: Provide information to identify yourself

Part 2: Review and accept the WVU Annual Security Responsibility Statement (if it has been more than one year since you agreed) if any of your roles are associated with WVU including former students and retirees. For WVU Medicine only users, there are other internal Security Responsibility Statements currently signed.

Part 3: WVU employees with an HSC campus and WVU Medicine employees automatically have their password expiration set for 90 days. All other individuals without a HIPAA compliance requirement may optionally complete the security quiz to extend the life of your password to 180 days (if it has been more than one year since last taken).

Notice: WVU Office 365 Mobility Users

Faculty and staff using portable devices such as Apple or Android smartphones to connect to the WVU Office 365 Mobility system should temporarily place them in airplane mode or shut them off during password resets.

Directions

1. Go to the login.wvu.edu page and select Claim Account.

2. Enter your First Name, Last Name, and Date of Birth in the corresponding spaces.

Your first and last names need to match the way they are recorded in official WVU or WVU Medicine records, and your date of birth can be entered by clicking the drop-down arrows to select month, day, and year, or by typing in those spaces.

In this example, Sally Scholar was born on March 27, 1997:

3. In the ID Type drop-down field, select one of the following for which you know your corresponding number:

  • WVUID (West Virginia University/WVU Medicine provided 9-digit number)
  • WVU Employee Number (Option only for WVU employees)

Finding Your WVUID

To recall your WVUID, go to the “ Forgot your WVUID?” link on the left. This will redirect you to the WVUID recovery page.

4. In the ID space, enter the corresponding number for the ID Type you chose in the previous step. In this example, WVUID was selected for the ID Type, and the corresponding ID number of 800034892 was entered:

5. Answer the validation question in the provided space by clicking the check box.

reCAPTCHA is a validation service that protects the website from spam and abuse.

6. Normally the following will be displayed:

Alternatively, you may see a set of pictures similar to these:

Click on all the images that meet the criteria selecting for and click Verify. If prompted with an additional set of pictures, repeat these steps or select the audio option by clicking on the headphones.

7. Click the Next button once you have provided all needed information.

Notice: Already Activated

If your account has already been activated, you will be redirected to the Reset Account page.

If the system reports any issues, please attempt to correct them, and then click Next again.

8. If presented, please read and accept the Annual Security Responsibility Statement to continue.

If you are resetting your account within one year of agreeing to the WVU Annual Security Responsibility Statement, you will go directly to the Security Quiz page.

9. If you are eligible, you may extend your password’s duration from 90 to 180 days, you by completing a security quiz once per year. Please answer the questions and hit Submit. You may also Opt Out at any time and proceed.

If you are resetting your account within one year of completing the Security Quiz, you will go directly to the Challenge Questions page.

10. The next step is to select three different challenge questions from the drop-down options, enter three different answers and click Submit.

  • Challenge questions can help you confirm your identity if you forget your password and need to reset it.
  • For security purposes, your responses cannot include your first or last name, username, employee number, WVUID or birthdate. They must also be at least four characters long.
  • The answers do not need to be accurate responses to the questions; you just need to be able to remember them.

11. Create a password in the Password space and type it again in the Confirm Password space. A strength indicator to the right will show how effective your password is.

Your password will intentionally display dots for each character typed to prevent others near your computer screen from seeing your password.

12. Click Submit on the password screen to complete the process.

If you have completed the process correctly, a Success message will pop up as shown below.

You account has been reset successfully.

Along with stating your username.

You will now be able to access your account with your new password.

Notice: WVU Office 365 Mobility Users

Be sure to update the password in your mobile devices before returning them from airplane mode to prevent an account lockout.

Check Account Status

Background

If you'd like to check your account status, you can now do so without calling the WVU ITS Service Desk or WVU Medicine Customer Support.

Directions

1. Go to the login.wvu.edu website and click the Check Account Status button.

2. Type your username and password in the provided space and click to Login.

3. Your account information will display. See the example:

Change Password

Background

WVU and WVU Medicine passwords must be changed periodically for your protection. Changing passwords regularly can limit exposure to data if an account has been compromised. If you ever suspect your account has been compromised, change your password immediately and notify the appropriate personnel.

Directions

1. Go to the login.wvu.edu website and click the Change Password button.

2. Type your username in the provided space and click Next.

Annual Security Statement

If you are in the population that needs to agree and have not agreed to the WVU Annual Security Responsibility Statement in the last 12 months, you will go to that page to read and accept the statement. If you have agreed within 12 months, you will go to either the Security Quiz (only applicable for individuals eligible for the 180-day password expiration if not completed in the last year) or the Challenge questions page.

3. Enter the valid response for your challenge question that is presented. Then click Next to proceed.

You previously provided these answers at the time of account activation, or during a password change. You have 3 tries to enter a correct answer. If you fail, then you need to Reset Account

Forgot Password

Background

The “Forgot Password” function enables you to reset your password if you cannot recall it.

Faculty and staff using portable devices such as Apple or Android smartphones to connect to the WVU Office 365 Mobility system should temporarily place them in airplane mode, or shut them off during password resets.

Directions

1. Go to the login.wvu.edu website and click the Forgot Password button.

2. Type your username in the provided space and click Next.

Reset Account

Background

WVU passwords must be changed periodically for your protection. If you let your password expire, your account will go into a locked status. This process resets your account back to its normal state. Completing this process will not change the contents of any of your existing WVU or WVU Medicine accounts.

The Reset Account process includes five parts:

Choosing a Good Password

Background

When choosing your password, you must use a password that has not been used on any system, ever.

  • Must be at least 8 characters in length.
  • Must contain characters from at least three of the following four categories:
    1. Uppercase letters: A-Z
    2. Lowercase letters: a-z
    3. Numbers: 0-9
    4. Only these special characters: / ! ^ ? : . { } [ ] ~ - _
  • Must be different than previous 5 passwords
  • Cannot include your first name, middle name, last name, or username, blank spaces, or be among the last five passwords used.
  • Do not reuse your username and password on any systems outside WVU and WVU Medicine
  • Do not use special character sequences such as //

Notice: Password Security

Do not reuse your username and password on any systems outside of WVU. Re-using an old password could cause a conflict.

Change Theme

Background

We are excited to offer two color palettes in the Login Self Service console. The default theme is light; however, if you prefer to use the dark theme, your selection will save in your cache for the next time you visit. To change themes, simply click the sun or moon in the top right corner of the screen. Below is a sample of each theme:
