Employees and students: Be alert to ransomware scam targeting colleges and universities

A global ransomware scam is expanding and now targeting higher education institutions. These emails make a physical threat, then demand that you pay a ransom in bitcoin to stop that threat from occurring.

The details and sender names on these messages vary, but the goal is to steal money. Do not click on links in the email, reply to the sender or provide information. If you get a suspicious email, send it as an attachment to DefendYourData@mail.wvu.edu.
