Employees: Be wary of emails seeking wire transfer requests despite name of sender

Since Monday, several employees have received fraudulent emails in which the sender’s address has been disguised as that of a high-ranking University official seeking assistance with a wire transfer. Faculty and staff who receive such emails should NOT respond but instead forward the email as an attachment to

These emails are intended to trick recipients into sending money from some sort of official account. If you receive such an email, be aware it is likely a scam and forward to Information Technology Services for review.

Spruce Knob cluster will be down 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19 to 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23

High Performance Computing Users: The Spruce Knob cluster will be unavailable from 8 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19 to 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23 while Information Technology Services performs important semi-annual maintenance.

We will be upgrading the UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) batteries, which are close to end of life. The UPS provides backup power to Spruce Knob and its related systems during power outages. ITS will also be applying security updates and patches during this planned outage.

Mountaineer Cards, website will not be available for 24 hours starting 9 a.m. Nov. 21

Mountaineer Cards will not function on or off campus and the MyMountaineerCard website will be unavailable from 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21 until 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22 while important maintenance and security patching is performed on the CS Gold database.

This work is being performed over Thanksgiving break to minimize inconvenience. Please contact the ITS Service Desk at 304-293-4444 with any questions or concerns.

Students: Redesigned Mountaineer Card site should help you find information faster

Mountaineer Card Services, now a unit within Information Technology Services, has a new web presence that should better serve students by consolidating related content and offering easier navigation.

Students can easily learn how and where to use the Mountaineer Card both on and off campus, and how to manage funds online. The new site also prominently features buttons to save you time with two of the most common tasks -- reporting a lost card and adding funds to Mountie Bounty. The previous website,, will automatically redirect to the new site starting Friday, Nov. 11.

STAR will be down 5 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 for emergency outage

STAR and all STAR-related academic systems will be unavailable from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 for emergency maintenance. This work will involve a critical technology upgrade that will improve the system’s integration with eCampus.

Information Technology Services apologizes for the short notice and for any inconvenience this may create.

Faculty: Blackboard Voice Tools will be replaced Dec. 28; training available

VoiceThread will replace Blackboard Voice Tools in eCampus on Dec. 28, and Information Technology Services is offering webinars and in-person training for those who want to become familiar with the new feature before the spring semester.

VoiceThread is already integrated with eCampus and accessible with a single click. It will automatically create an account when instructors log in, based on the user’s history with the system. When students and instructors click on the VoiceThread link within a course, VoiceThread will generate the group and add the user.

Some WVU Login requirements changing Nov. 13; system will be down 7 a.m.-noon

To better protect University data and systems, Information Technology Services is adding new features to the WVU Login system, including a prohibition on re-using the same password within one calendar year. Login services will be unavailable from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday, Nov. 13 while we perform the maintenance required to add this and other enhancements. This means you will not be able to claim accounts or reset passwords during this time.
