ITS seeking comment on revisions to acceptable use and sensitive data policies

Faculty, staff and students are invited to review and comment on revisions to two Information Technology Services policies that have been updated to reflect best practices and to provide clear and unambiguous guidance on the appropriate use of the University’s technology and data resources.

Please submit comments on these policies to Chief Information Security Officer Alex Jalso at by 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 20.

The Sensitive Data Protection Policy has been updated to include proper guidance for the electronic handling of credit cards. WVU will follow the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI-DSS). This policy would prohibit WVU employees from sending and accepting credit card numbers by email, and prohibit storing credit card numbers in WVU systems except where required by federal or state law.

The Acceptable Use policy, which governs the University’s technology and data resources, has been updated to explicitly define examples of unacceptable conduct. Those activities include but are not limited to using technology to transmit, retrieve, access, print or store anything of a defamatory, discriminatory, harassing, offensive, obscene or sexually explicit nature.

The draft policies are posted here. Please enter your WVU Login credentials when prompted to review the document.
