ITS aware of and monitoring slow Internet service, sporadic disconnections

Users on all WVU campuses may be seeing slow Internet connections and/or sporadic disconnection because of problems that our service provider began experiencing Wednesday. Those problems are continuing today.

Information Technology Services cannot resolve the issue because the source of the problem is not within the WVU network. However, we are actively monitoring the situation and communicating with our provider.

Login, other services could be unavailable Sunday, Jan. 24 7:30-11:30 a.m.

Login, the identity authentication service formerly known as MyID, and a variety of other services may be available but are not guaranteed 7:30–11:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 24 while Information Technology Services conducts important quarterly maintenance. Login users will not be able to claim accounts or change passwords during this period. Other services, including email, may be briefly affected.

Please note that when this work is complete, the single sign-on page that students, faculty and staff use to authenticate their credentials will have a different, plainer appearance. The new page will work the same way, verifying credentials to allow access to WVU systems and services.

ITS adding walk-up support station at Evansdale Library starting January 2016

Information Technology Services has opened a new Service Center offering walk-up technical support on the ground floor of the Evansdale Library and will continue offering ITS Connect service at the Mountainlair next to the Post Office.

Starting today (Jan. 11), hours at both locations will be 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday through February. Hours will expand to 8:15 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in March. ITS will reduce hours or close during holidays, University breaks and other times when students leave campus. ITS also will staff the locations with additional student workers during peak demand times, typically the first few weeks of each semester.

High performance computing services will expand under ITS supervision

High-performance computing and related services for the University research community are now being managed through Information Technology Services and positioned for growth under the new label Research Computing.

The group previously known as HPC is now part of ITS, which improves cost-effectiveness by allowing Research Computing to take advantage of more discounts rather than seeking contracts on its own. This positions Research Computing to be able to offer new and expanded services for researchers. The transition to ITS, which occurred during late 2015, also ensures better integration with IT support and resources.

Nearly 13,800 users hit WVU Portal on launch day; use consistent over holidays

The WVU Portal, a new mobile-friendly application at, had nearly 13,800 unique users on the day it went live, Dec. 7, 2015, and continued to get thousands of hits every day throughout the holiday break. In its first week, the portal drew no fewer than 9,651 unique visitors per day.

For current and newly admitted students, the portal is a single gateway to critical services and applications, from logging into eCampus, Gmail and STAR to checking the status of the PRT. The tool replaces, but students and employees who type in that URL will automatically be redirected to the new site through the end of the spring semester.
